The Death of Ranching in the West

Ranching is a lifestyle that most dream about as a sort of vacation.

Work on a ranch is hard and long, with many difficult tasks that need to be done, often for almost no pay in the end. When a rancher goes to bed at night, it is usually with the thought of what he will need to do tomorrow morning.

Beauty is always around you.

On a ranch, as in the movies, you will constantly see beauty. Beauty is in the land, the cattle, the sunrise, or even in the weariness that comes from a long day in the elements of nature. Nothing compares to seeing a sunrise over a sage brush covered hill while you are saddling your horse to gather cattle for shipping.

The Ugly Truth (The Death of Ranching)

Ranching is a business. As a business it is threatened by what is going on in the world around us. Ranchers may own land that is worth a very large amount of money, but cash is what you have to live on and cash is what ranchers are short on. With the current world of regulation and taxes on everything from manure to labor, the way of life we so often revere may be going into the sunset forever.

The rich may control all of the beef industry, only because they are the only ones that can afford to own the land and comply with all the regulations. Real life is rough and sometimes complicated. Change is a part of life, but some changes can destroy what is literally feeding you and your family.
